A Little Bit About Me
Hello, and thank you for visiting! My name is Bernd. Growing up in Berlin, Germany, I came to the U.S. several years ago, working as a software engineer for a large German company. After retiring I decided to stay in the U.S. and currently live in Florida.
While I still (unwillingly) maintain a slight German accent (some people think it’s cute), in my writing I try to be as exact and error-free as possible. I have always liked the English language, and when I started learning it as a fifth-grader in Germany it was one of my favorite classes. At that time I had no idea that I would speak it for a good part of my life.
Friends and colleagues often ask me how to spell certain words, or they want me to read a document that they wrote and make suggestions on how to improve it. This made me realize that I have a talent that could benefit people. Combine that with the exact thinking of an engineer and you get some basic ingredients for successful proofreading. Naturally, there is more to this, and I outline it in my post Proofreading Strategies.
As in many other professions, practicing your skills and continued learning to improve them are two essential elements for lasting success as a proofreader. I have successfully completed several courses, including the excellent Becoming a Proofreader by Knowadays, and work currently as a freelancer for Proofed. Giving back, I have also volunteered proofreading time to Project Gutenberg.
When you trust me with your documents I am well aware of the responsibility that I am taking on. At that point, I become a member of your team, and as such we are combining our capabilities and strengths for the best possible result. I am committed to always contributing my knowledge and experience to your project to the best of my abilities.
